TV or a good book???

Posted in , ,

I'm sure I've mentioned this a few hundred times... I'm a huge Louis L'Amour fan. I have read everything he's written (even the short stories and poems). I read and reread his books and they never seem to get old for me.

Lately I have found that TV is becoming more and more irritating. The shows they have come up with nowadays are completely pathetic for the most part in my opinion. Even the brainless ESPN has become boring for the most part. I really don't care much about the opinions of some washed up athlete that was only mediocre as a player. Then they want to pay him some ginormous amount of money for his opinion. If he was that damn good he would be an assistant coach for a team instead of an opinionated dumb ass for the network (they tend to rile me).

With that said I have been rereading a few L'Amour books as of late. The problem I'm finding is that I can't put the dang book down. I read for 4-6 hours on the weekends at a sitting. At night before I go to sleep I make sure that I give my self a minimum of 45 minutes to read. I don't know if that's an illness, but I just can't seem to get the same excitement from a movie as I can from a good book.

So what do you think? I know some of you are avid fans of some of the TV programming on right now. Are the shows better than the books? Does the movie do justice for the book it is based on? I tend to think no for the most part, especially lately. I will have to admit that I went and saw Avatar and that is one of the few movies I've seen in recent years where the imagination of the Producer/Director/Writer is on par with mine.

So if you are a TV person instead of a writer what are the shows I should be checking out? If you are a book person instead of a TV person what are some new authors to try. I like anything well written. Westerns are just a favorite because L'Amour is so good at what he does. Clancy, Cussler, Koontz, and Griffin are a few of my other reads.

Not so much a writer so I'll chime in. Lost, but then again I already know your thoughts on it. NFL, um...ditto. I love catching Law & Order SVU and tons of repeats. Really everything else I watch is mindless reality television which knowing what I do about you, probably aren't into.

Now that I think about it I probably wasted your time haha

Bendigo! The book is always always better! It's nice sometimes to see how someone interprets a book for film but the experience of reading is entirely different to watching someone else's visualisation of the story. I adore the movies although I don't watch much tv anymore. Still, nothing is as good as a book. I share your excitement when I take a new one (or an old one) in my hands.
It's hard to recommend a book because I love such a variety. One long time favourity is Jack Finney's Time and Again but who knows if you'll like it!
Sorry about the long comment. Books, you know, are a bit of an obsession for me. It's your fault for starting me off!

I try to read the book before I see a movie.... I try to watch 4 or 5 movies a week, and I typically find that the book is better than the movie....

I'm waiting to watch 'My Sister's Keeper' and 'The Time Traveler's Wife' because I hear the books are wayyyyyy better than the movies.... And they change the endings all the time because audiences love the sappy happy endings....

I love TV.... Mad Men.... Lost.... Modern Family.... And I'm with Ian.... I'm addicted to horrible reality television.

If you like informational programming, Ken Burns does documentaries on Jazz, National Parks, Baseball and many other topics.... They're packed with information and all really interesting!

I am a nerd. I watch a lot of Discovery Channel and ID Discovery Channel sometimes SyFy (dumb that they changed it) and BBC. I also programs on HBO and Showtime. Not so much into the other stuff. I read and watch TV depending on my mood. I DVR a lot so I don't have to put up with commercials.

Reading is a passion of mine. TV is annoying and irritating. I catch the ball games and news on TV only. I am a legal thriller and mystery reader. I used to read several books a week. Blogging has cut into that time though. I don't think anyone can go wrong being a frequent reader. There is always something to learn from a book.

Books books books!! Hands down. All the time.

BUT...if you were to watch television, anything on HBO is awesome. Dexter, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and some that are not on the air anymore, Carnivale and John From Cincinnati.

And there you have it :)

Hey hey Bendigo!

I love doing both, actually!

TV: I'm really into anything that has a crime in it, like Criminal Minds, CSI, Cold case. I also think Desperate housewives is really funny and light...always an enjoyable watch! Oh, and Ugly Betty: you cannot ever in your life miss Ugly Betty!

Movies: I rented angels and demons lately and was really disappointed because they changed the end of the story completely! I don't understand why they chose to save the last of the 4 priests in the end! We rented Millenium too--it wasn't bad, really--and I think it's a book. Haven't read it though!

Books: I've read "Lovely Bones" lately and it's going out in a movie this Friday. It was good! I always enjoy classics like Alexandre Dumas and Victor Hugo too! The Count of Monte Cristo is long, but it's a beauty!

Hey Bendigo!

I'm not a TV person, I am with you on the mind numbing idiocy that has become modern Television (at least in the North American culture). With that being said, I admit I am addicted to a couple of shows: Dexter - I enjoy the dialog and the creativity and ethical confusion it causes; Doctor Who - A Science Fiction TV show that has existed in British television since 1960, I would recommend it if you are not or have no already watched it.

Although I am not a TV person, film and movies are exhilarating. I agree that a movie can not remake or visualize a well written book; however, a film can offer a different perspective that the director may have seen that we haven't.

As a writer I love books, the problem with books I have, as a university student, is the time that I have in between textbooks and novels. I forget the Author, but I would recommend the writer of Generation X and All Families are Psychotic, amazing psychological writer. Also I am reading a new British writer of the book "Johnathan Strange and Mr Norrell" - it's quite well written.

I love film/movies and books, but modern television is mind numbing and ridiculous; disgraceful to the film making industry. :( Sorry this is so long btw.

Lol..if your comments weren't long I wouldn't know what to do...AND I do in fact love Dr. Who just don't get it much n ow that they have turned all gooey on SyFy...

I'll give those books a try...I like the book that makes me a little nervous and most pyschological thrillers do that for me.. thanks for the tip
